Dave Dowdy invites MING / MIWC members to celebrate his birthday at the Waldwirtschaft Biergarten:

I am very happy to announce that the Waldwirtschaft Großhesselohe has agreed that I can hold my birthday party (80 years old) in the beer garden. For this occasion I have been able to secure Soulmaster, Mel Canady and his band Chessboard to play for us. The music starts at 1 PM and will last to 5 PM. You will hear the great soul classics from Bill Withers, Bobby Womack, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Johnny Guitar Watson, James Brown and many othes for your listening and dancing pleasure.

There will be no cover charge, nor a charge for the band. You only have to pay for what you consume in the beer garden. Please do not bring me any presents. I don't have a car and have no possibility to take the presents home. I only ask you for a generous tip for the band. That will be most helpful. -- Dave

Come along and join us for a nice ladies Oktoberfest Breakfast (Wiesn Frühstuck) at Rischart’s Cafe Kaiserschmarrn. This is the lovely Oktoberfest tent that looks like a Gingerbread House. We have a table reserved from 10 AM till 1 PM. Breakfast is a la carte and there is no minimum purchase and no reservation fee. Offered are oven fresh rolls and croissants, free range Bavarian eggs, organic and fairtrade coffee, yogurt and fruit cups and of course their specialty pan fresh Kaiserschmarrn. At 12 noon the bar opens (cocktails but no beer) and the music starts. There is also a good chance for those that want to to stay longer that we can keep our seats until 15:30 at the latest when the next official reservation starts. At 2 pm there is a Wedding Cake Cutting Ceremony“ to celebrate the wedding of Prince Ludwig 1 and Princess Therese. Their wedding is the reason we even have an Oktoberfest.

Please note: No large bags or backpacks allowed. The Oktoberfest grounds open at 10:00 am.

Evening English Book Club

Welcome to the Evening Book Group! We meet one evening a month from 19:00 - 21:00 to discuss a book we have previously chosen that meets our criteria of relating to “cross-cultural” topics. That is a wide definition that encompasses national cultures, caste, gender, lifestyle or anything else the group accepts as exploring the cultural aspects of a particular group. We will decide each month’s book at the meeting in the preceding month.

We will meet at members' homes on a rotating basis. There will be a limit of 10 participants each month to allow for better discussion and so that more members will have a chance to host in their homes.

We will also meet on Zoom

In the Käfer tent, visitors to the Oktoberfest don’t celebrate in a classic festival tent, but in a genuine Bavarian log cabin. It offers its guests an idyllic atmosphere in the style of a farm in the Alps. Rustic, cozy, as if in a ski lodge, decorated with elaborate flower arrangements and genuine antiques.

Meeting Point: We will meet in front of the Käfer tent at 11:00 for the traditional picture. The table is reserved from 11:30 - 15:00 h.

Cost: €56.50

(50 food voucher, 5 tip, 1.50 reservation fee)

Each of the attendees can eat/drink for the amount of € 50 - the attendees should keep track of what they order. If they wish to consume more, they can pay the extras at the event. The club and Käfer will not reimburse any money if the attendees consume less.

Registration and payment: To secure your spot in the Käfer Zelt, first register, then make a Bank Transfer to the MIWC account within 7 days of your registration. If the club has not received the payment within 10 days, you may lose your registration if there is a waitlist.

Trip to the Eagle‘s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) (01 Oct 2026)

Please note this is a limited event. Please only register if you are positive you are able to attend. Registration opens on August 10, Monday.

Join us on a day trip to the famous Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) high above Berchtesgaden. The Eagle’s Nest was built in 1938 as a diplomatic meeting place and was presented to Adolf Hitler for his 50 th birthday. Today, it serves as a historical site and mountain restaurant with spectacular panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps. The nearby Obersalzberg Documentation Center provides important background information about the Nazi dictatorship and the history of the area. Besides learning about history, we’ll have enough time to enjoy the breathtaking mountain scenery, have lunch and simply spend a great day together.

Where to meet: Ostbahnhof, lower level, near Café Rischart at 7:40a.m.. Our train, RE 5, direction Salzburg, leaves from track 8 at 7.57 a.m.

Please contact Astrid if you do not have a Deutschland-Ticket. She will arrange for a group ticket.

Ticket price for the Eagle’s Nest bus (round trip), including the historic elevator and the admission to the Documentation Center is €34.70, to be paid on site. Return to Munich Ostbahnhof: 7 p.m. or 19:00.

Lunar and Other Meteorites as Key Geochemical Archives for Planetary Science

Lunar meteorites and other extraterrestrial materials are unique archives of planetary history. In this talk, I will introduce the major meteorite groups and explain what they can tell us about their parent bodies, including the Moon, Mars, and the asteroid Vesta. I will also highlight lunar and other space missions, and how scientific research in space contributes to our understanding of the Solar System.

Using examples from different meteorites, I will present insights from Raman spectroscopy combined with high-resolution analytical techniques. These methods allow us to identify minerals and trace changes caused by impacts, heating, melting, or interactions with fluids.

By combining mineralogical and chemical information, we can reconstruct processes that shaped these rocks and their parent bodies over billions of years. Such studies also help us interpret data from planetary missions and improve analytical tools for future robotic and human exploration.

What makes a joke funny? Why does one person have a room roaring with laughter while another gets…crickets?

In this playful, hands-on workshop, we’ll dissect the anatomy of a joke—without killing it in the process. We’ll explore the rules of humor: setup and punchline, surprise and misdirection, timing, tension, exaggeration, wordplay, and the deliciously unexpected.

You don’t have to be a comedian. You just need a sense of curiosity and silliness and a willingness to experiment. Come discover the science, art, and sheer fun of making people laugh.

Please bring a joke or two that you’re willing to put on the operating table.

Living in Germany

A new name, a new focus. Let’s start with lunch together and a conversation about what we already know about how to live in Germany and what do we still want to learn. For example: How can we manage holiday traditions from home? What’s been the biggest impact of living Germany that you didn’t anticipate? How do we stay connected to family around the globe? Bring your burning question and we’ll figure out how to connect to answers in the coming Fall through Spring.

Guests: One guest per member. If the minimum of 30 is not reached, registration will be opened to additional guests.

Join us for a day in nature! Germany’s forests need help! By participating in planting small sapling trees, you can contribute to the conservation, protection and restoration of Germany’s natural forest development, and towards creating future climate-resilient forests. Enjoy fresh air, good company, and good food will be provided on site. Everyone can make a difference come and be part of it.

Location: Forstenrieder Park

Time: 9:00 - 16:00

Cost: 5 Euro donation

Conditions of participation: All participants must be covered by health insurance, participants from outside Germany must have a valid foreign health insurance.

We have found a family-friendly tree-planting project from the (non-profit) Bergwaldprojekt e.V. and Bayerische Staatsforsten. Together they organise sustainable forestry projects since many years, working with forestry experts and willing citizens. This tree-planting project is located in the Bavarian forest south of Munich, at Forstenrieder Park (Unterdill area), and is specifically designed and organised for local citizens to participate i.e. families and people of all ages, all generations!

The work is practical but usually adapted so everyone can help, NO experience is needed! and it is FREE of charge. However, we would like to collect 5€ from participants for the guide and kitchen staff, and towards some financial support to the organization.

We should have an (English speaking) expert to guide and help us on the day, and they provide the necessary tools and small sapling trees. The Bergwald projects kitchen team will provide a warm biologisch vegetarian breakfast and a warm soup for lunch, usually sourced from local produce. Coffee, tea and water are available all day...and they say, also a little chocolate....

You will need weather appropriate clothing, like sturdy shoes, weatherproof rain jacket incase of drizzle or light showers, and a smile!

Dear ladies we are looking for vendors for the November Bazaar and helpers.

Suggestions:

Perhaps a table with jewelry that is in good condition and would like to sell, good conditioned clothing, shoes, purses,

Art cards, crafting supplies and items

Looking for basket donations(like fun baskets filled with theme items)

We will not have a raffle like last year but we will raffle 2 quilts off.
